Department Headquarters

Department Headquarters
This is the home of The Department of Indiana, and has been since it was built by the State of Indiana for World War I veterans in lieu of a War Bonus. The building housed the National Organization as well until the new, larger building was dedicated in 1948.

Department Headquarters staff members will be released from duty at 3:30 p.m. today, March 26, 2012, to avoid the possibly heated emotions and rhetoric that may arise during a scheduled march to protest the shooting of 16-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida last week. Protesters have scheduled the march from the former Crispus Attucks High School Campus to arrive at The American Legion Mall in Indianapolis about 4:30 p.m. today. Legionnaires are encouraged to avoid the area immediately surrounding Department Headquarters during the event.
